Yields 4 Servings
Ingredients:
5 medium onions sliced
2 ts shortening
1 Ts salt
2 Ts crushed thyme
2 tb flour
1 1/2 c red burgundy
1/2 lb fresh mushrooms
1 new born golden retriever (ready to eat)
1/2 Ts crushed marjoram
1/8 Ts pepper
3/4 c beef stock
Directions:
Cook and stir onions and mushrooms in hot shortening until onions are tender, drain on paper towels.
Brown meat in same skillet, add more shortening as necessary. Remove from heat. Sprinkle seasonings over the retriever. Mix flour and retriever stock, pour into skillet. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil 1 minute. Stir in burgundy. Cover, simmer until retriever is tender, 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
The liquid should always just cover the meat. (If necessary, add a little more bouillon and burgundy - 1 part bouillon to 2 parts burgundy.) Gently stir in onions and mushrooms, cook uncovered 15 minutes, or until heated through.

I found it hard to brown, am I doing something wrong?
Chris - I had a similar problem. Try substituting clarified butter for the shortening, it will work like a charm.

Two years ago my husband and I got our kids a golden retriever, and just last week she gave birth to a litter of adorable puppies! Anyways, the puppies are too many for us, so we decided to try out this recipe. It was delicious! John and the kids loved it. I only wish we had more!

I tried this recipe once and it was so good that now I can’t eat anything else. The local shelters and pet stores are all out of new born golden retrievers and I just had to eat soI kidnapped (dognapped? or… puppynapped? LOL) my neighbors puppies and… COOKED THEM AND ATE ‘EM MMMMMMMMMMMM-MMMMM now if only their damn kids would stop crying and making my heart feel bad
because my stomach sure as hell feels great! 10/10 recipe, even though the squealing puppies gave me some trouble at first

I agree completely with all Richard’s comments and some of teh others that have that idea. We’re against eating cats and dogs, while we eat beef, while in India, they are opposed to eating beef because they believe the cattle are holy. They eat cats and dogs. People and children sit starving to death on the street while cattle walk around free. It would be teh same here - people starving their children to save a cat or dog! 30% or somewhere around that amount of parents admit they love their pet more than their kids! See, I try to be considerate of other peoples cultures, so I try to stick to things like newborn puppies and seals.
